Die Kapellengeschichte von Simonskall beginnt bereits im 18. Jahrhundert. 1741 gewährte der Bischof Franz Kaspar von Franken-Siersdorf ( Erzbistum Köln) dem Simonskaller Thomas Scholl eine Hauskapellen-Berechtigung, auch für die anderen Einwohner des Ortes. Die Kapelle befand sich in einem dafür eingerichteten Raum im ersten Stock über der Einfahrt in der „Simonskaller Burg“. Diese Hauskapellen-Berechtigung wurde 1869 von Erzbischof Paul Melchers wieder verlängert und 1917 nochmals bestätigt
Die engen Platzverhältnisse in der Burg und der Wunsch, ein eigenes Kirchlein in Simonskall zu haben, führten am 17.10.1930 zur Gründung des „Kapellenbauvereins Simonskall“. Sprecher und großer Förderer des Vereins war Carl Hamel aus Düren, Verleger der „Dürener Zeitung“.
Am 1. Februar1934 genehmigte das Bischöfliche Generalvikariat Aachen den Bau einer Kapelle auf einem von der Familie Scholl geschenkten Grundstück. Nach der Grundsteinlegung am 19.8.1934 wurden am 7.4.1935 die beiden gestifteten Glocken geweiht und am 16.6.1935 der Altar durch den Aachener Bischof Josef Vogt konsekriert.
Der Kapellenbauverein Simonskall wurde durch die Geheime Staatspolizei der Nationalsozialisten am 30. Januar 1939 aufgelöst. Die durch Kriegseinwirkung beschädigte Marienkapelle wurde im Sommer 1952 wieder instandgesetzt. Im Herbst 1977 erfolgte die Renovierung des Innenraumes.
75 Jahre nach der Fertigstellung des Kapellenbaus bildete sich im Januar 2010 in Simonskall ein überkonfessioneller „Freundeskreis Marienkapelle“. Dieser organisierte im Jubiläumsjahr Konzertveranstaltungen und Spendensammlungen, um mit deren Erlös die dringend notwendige Kapellendach-Sanierung durchführen zu können.
Bei einer Dorfversammlung am 13. Dezember 2010 wurde der „Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Marienkapelle Simonskall“ mit Sitz in Simonskall gegründet. Der Verein bezweckt die Erhaltung und Ausgestaltung der Kapelle „St. Mariä Himmelfahrt“ – kurz Marienkapelle genannt. Seit 2011 finden jährlich unter dem Motto „Simonskaller Kapellentage“ einige Festgottesdienste sowie mehrere Benefizkonzerte in der Kapelle statt. Der Spendenerlös der Besucher fließt in die jeweiligen Projekte des Vereins ein. So konnten der Innenanstrich der Kapelle, die Neuinstallation der Innenbeleuchtung sowie die Anschaffung einer neuen Bestuhlung vollständig durchgeführt werden. Die Marienkapelle hat nunmehr Sitzplätze für rund 80 Besucher.
Die komplette Erneuerung der Bruchsteinmauer am Treppenaufgang zur Kapelle ist im Herbst 2014 erfolgt. Die dadurch notwendige Hangbepflanzung konnte kurz vor dem Glocken-Fest Ende September 2015 fertiggestellt werden.
Bisher krönender Abschluss der Aktivitäten des Fördervereins war die Neuanschaffung eines Geläutes (Marien- und Josef-Glocke) mit Läuteanlage am 3./4. Oktober 2015. Die größere Marien-Glocke wurde vom niederländischen Glockengießer Simon Laudy direkt vor Ort in Simonskall gegossen.

The chapel history of Simonskall begins as early as the 18th century. In 1741, Bishop Franz Kaspar von Franken-Siersdorf (Archbishopric of Cologne) granted Thomas Scholl from Simonskall a chapel license, also for the other inhabitants of the village. The chapel was located in a room set up for this purpose on the second floor above the entrance to the “Simonskaller Burg”. Archbishop Paul Melchers extended this chapel license in 1869 and confirmed it again in 1917
The limited space in the castle and the desire to have a small church of their own in Simonskall led to the founding of the “Simonskall Chapel Building Association” on October 17, 1930. Carl Hamel from Düren, publisher of the “Dürener Zeitung”, was the spokesman and great supporter of the association.
On February 1, 1934, the Episcopal Vicariate General of Aachen approved the construction of a chapel on land donated by the Scholl family. After the foundation stone was laid on August 19, 1934, the two donated bells were consecrated on April 7, 1935 and the altar was consecrated on June 16, 1935 by Bishop Josef Vogt of Aachen.
The Simonskall chapel building association was dissolved by the secret state police of the National Socialists on January 30, 1939. The Marienkapelle, which had been damaged during the war, was repaired in the summer of 1952. The interior was renovated in the fall of 1977.
75 years after the chapel was completed, a non-denominational “Friends of St. Mary’s Chapel” group was formed in Simonskall in January 2010. In the anniversary year, this group organized concerts and fundraisers in order to use the proceeds to carry out the urgently needed renovation of the chapel roof.
At a village meeting on December 13, 2010, the “Association of Friends and Supporters of St. Mary’s Chapel Simonskall” was founded with its headquarters in Simonskall. The purpose of the association is to preserve and decorate the chapel “St. Mary’s Assumption” – known as the Marienkapelle for short. Since 2011, several festive church services and charity concerts have been held in the chapel every year under the motto “Simonskall Chapel Days”. The proceeds from visitors‘ donations go towards the association’s respective projects. This enabled the interior of the chapel to be painted, the interior lighting to be reinstalled and new seating to be purchased. The Marienkapelle now has seating for around 80 visitors.
The complete renovation of the quarry stone wall at the staircase to the chapel was completed in the fall of 2014. The necessary planting on the slope was completed shortly before the bell festival at the end of September 2015.
The crowning glory of the association’s activities to date was the purchase of a new bell (Marien and Josef bells) with a ringing system on October 3-4, 2015. The larger Marien bell was cast on site in Simonskall by Dutch bell founder Simon Laudy.
