<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe splinter cross on the edge of Vossenack on Mestrenger Weg consists of shrapnel and bomb fragments. Crosses of this kind were often made after the Second World War to commemorate the events of the war, not only in the northern Eifel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cross was created by Reinhold Nie\u00dfen, Ulrich Hallmanns (CDU) and Reimund Scholl (former member of the H\u00fcrtgenwald History Association) and erected in 2005. The German and English inscription on the plinth reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn memory of the victims \/ This place was on November 03, 1944 \/ the starting point \/ for the attack of the III \/ and I \/ Battalions of the 112th (US) Inf.Regt \/ reinforced by the A Company 707 Tank Battalion \/ through the valley of the Kall on Schmidt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cross marks the starting point of the so-called Battle of All Souls and commemorates the victims. However, the inscription is not without its problems. The US soldiers launched their attack on Schmidt from here. The village had been cleared at the time, so there could be no \u201cvictims\u201d among the neutral parts of the population and the Nazi supporters there. So who were the \u201cvictims\u201d? The members of the Wehrmacht? If this is what is meant, then there were no perpetrators in the Second World War. The inscription thus decontextualizes the past. This paints a false picture of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
